Visa Renewal Timeline: What to Do 6 Months Before Your Stay Expires
QMAS and TTPS holders must apply within three months before their limit of stay expires and at least six weeks before it does. A month-by-month preparation timeline and document list, based on ImmD pages.
Short answer: ImmD asks QMAS and TTPS holders to apply for an extension within three months before their limit of stay expires and at least six weeks before it does; processing normally takes two to three weeks. If you will renew through your own business, start preparing the company, office and business records about six months before expiry.
Timeline
| Before expiry | What to do |
|---|---|
| 6 months | Decide whether you extend through employment or a business; form a Hong Kong company and register the business if you have not |
| 5 months | Arrange an office (for a first TTPS extension through a business, ImmD lists office set-up evidence such as a tenancy agreement); apply for a business bank account |
| 4 months | Build business records: contracts, invoices, receipts, staff or contractor arrangements |
| 3 months | Application window opens; apply online |
| 6 weeks | Latest time to apply |
| After applying | Usually two to three weeks; unless otherwise approved, you must leave Hong Kong when your stay expires even if the case is pending |
This timeline works back from ImmD’s published deadlines; your own preparation time may differ.
Common documents (business route)
- Valid travel document and Hong Kong identity card;
- Certificate of incorporation, business registration certificate, proof of ownership;
- Proof of the company’s financial standing, such as bank statements or audited accounts;
- Office set-up evidence such as a tenancy agreement (TTPS first extension or change of company);
- Business records such as contracts and invoices.
Always check ImmD’s latest guidance for the full list.
Three common mistakes
- Forming the company in the last month: with no trading record it is hard to show the business runs healthily and sustainably.
- Only an address: a mailing address alone says little about real working arrangements.
- Not being in Hong Kong: you must be in Hong Kong when you apply, pay and collect the e-Visa.
