Can You Open a Hong Kong Company Bank Account with a Virtual Office Address?
HKMA lists demanding evidence of a Hong Kong office from all overseas companies as an unreasonable request. What banks actually look at, what to prepare with a virtual office address, and what to do if refused.
Short answer: You can apply. HKMA’s account-opening guidance says banks should not require evidence of a Hong Kong office from all overseas companies regardless of their business model; banks ask for the registered office address and the principal place of business, both if they differ. Approval depends on the bank’s overall assessment of your business, not on whether you have a physical office, and no provider can guarantee it.
What banks look at
According to HKMA’s Useful Information About Account Opening and Maintenance, banks usually ask for:
- Certificate of incorporation, company search report, articles;
- Identity and ownership details of beneficial owners and controllers;
- The purpose of the account;
- ID and authorisation of the person acting for the company;
- The registered office address and the principal place of business.
With a virtual office address, be ready to explain
- Where you actually operate: state your real principal place of business (it may be in the Mainland or overseas); don’t present the registered address as your operating base.
- That the business is real: contracts, invoices, supplier and customer details, website or online store.
- Source of funds and expected activity: monthly amounts, main countries and counterparties.
- Who provides the address: an address from a licensed TCSP is easier for banks to check.
If you are refused
HKMA suggests asking the bank for its reasons, asking it to reconsider, applying to another bank, or emailing accountopening@hkma.gov.hk. You can also start with a digital bank or payment provider and add a traditional bank account later.
How we can help
We offer a virtual office from HK$1,600/year and bank account support: a free review of your business first, then document preparation and appointments. Banks decide independently; approval is not guaranteed.
